In August 2018, the Washington, D.C. law firm Smithsonian Associates, LLC rescinded internship offers to four Harvard Law School students who had signed a letter supporting the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement for Palestinian rights. Smithsonian Associates had pulled the internship offers shortly after they were extended, reportedly citing “conflicting viewpoints.” The move was widely condemned by civil rights groups, and many legal scholars argued that rescinding the offers constituted illegal discrimination. Smithsonian Associates then reversed its decision and reinstated the internship offers.
