U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris recently criticized the previous administration led by Donald Trump for ‘gaslighting’ the American public about the truth of the events surrounding the January 6th attack on the Capitol. During a conversation, Harris expressed her dissatisfaction over the distortion of facts regarding the insurrection.
The Vice President emphasized that the January 6th insurrection was a direct attack on American democracy led by individuals spurred on by misinformation and falsehoods. The event resulted in the loss of lives, including Capitol police officers, and left a dark stain on the nation’s history.
During her critique, Harris emphasized the importance of truth in public discourse and leadership. She called out instances in which Trump and his administration misled the public, creating a narrative that downplayed the significance and violence of the January 6th attack. One such example was Trump’s claim that people who stormed the Capitol were ‘hugging and kissing’ the police and were ‘zero threat.’
Harris maintained that such statements are an attempt to rewrite history and divert attention from the facts. She decried this behaviour as ‘gaslighting’, a form of manipulation whereby perpetrators lead victims to question their perception of reality.
Harris concluded her statements with a call to action, urging Americans to seek out and demand truth from their leaders to ensure that events like January 6th are recognized and dealt with appropriately, rather than being downplayed or dismissed.
