The Biden administration is implementing sanctions against close associates of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, in an attempt to put pressure on Maduro’s regime. The individuals targeted are perceived as financially benefiting from their ties to Maduro.
This move comes as part of the Biden administration’s ongoing efforts to promote democratic processes and human rights in Venezuela, which is currently facing a mental health crisis, malnutrition, and a decline in oil production. As part of these measures, six individuals and ten entities related to the Maduro regime have been identified and sanctioned.
Given that a large part of Venezuelan society is affected by these crises, the Biden administration is using these sanctions as a tool to try and forge a democratic breakthrough. The sanctioned entities include the country’s National Electoral Council, the governor of the state of Miranda, and others who allegedly have links to Maduro.
Overall, the Biden administration aims to obtain concessions from the Maduro regime that facilitate a return to democracy, the realization of fair elections, and an improvement in the humanitarian situation in Venezuela.
