Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has reportedly misspoke about using weapons in war, according to the Harris campaign. The former Lieutenant Colonel in the Army National Guard made a reportedly inaccurate claim during a rally in support of Vice President Kamala Harris.
The Harris campaign clarified the comments that caught the attention of defense experts who pointed out that Walz’s military record did not involve combat deployments. Governor Walz misspoke about his service, the campaign spokesperson told reporters, noting that as a veteran, Walz served in a support role during Operation Enduring Freedom in Italy.
Walz mentioned his military service during a speech, saying, Those of us who carried weapons in war, warfighters, understand what they’re for. However, the comment sparked confusion and backlash given that Walz’s service records don’t suggest a direct combat role.
After the comments, Walz’s biography on his office’s site was reportedly adjusted to clarify that he served in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, rather than in direct combat. His office clarified that his role was in a support capacity for those in direct combat, and not on the front lines.
In a statement, a Harris campaign spokesperson said, While he did not serve in a combat zone, he is immensely proud of his service and the soldiers he served with. It was further stressed that Walz’s reference was aimed towards understanding the gravity of warfare, rather than any direct engagement in combat. The campaign recognized and emphasized Walz’s substantial contribution to the military service.
