Coinbase Ventures, the venture capital arm of cryptocurrency giant Coinbase, has invested in startups outside the US, particularly in India, Singapore, Australia and the UK. In the recent past, it has also backed companies in Japan, Germany, Turkey, Israel and South Africa.
Coinbase Ventures focuses on projects that are leveraging and supporting the adoption of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. The investment portfolio includes companies with a focus across various sectors including gaming, healthcare, payments and enterprise.
The most notable investment in India was in Zebpay, an Indian cryptocurrency exchange. Coinbase Ventures also made investments in Matic Network, a layer-two scaling solution platform which enables fast, inexpensive Ethereum transactions and Unocoin, an Indian cryptocurrency exchange.
Coinbase Ventures’ investment strategy is focused on finding the best teams with the ability to build and develop the most “innovative projects”. It also works closely with companies to investigate potential opportunities, provide industry-specific insights and assist with product development.
Coinbase Ventures’ investments outside the US emphasize its commitment to making long-term global investments. In the future, its international strategy could be completely or partially in-sourced instead of relying on external parties. This would mean a larger commitment to global projects and a greater focus on international markets.
