The debate over abortion rights continues to be focused heavily on the ballot in the U.S., particularly since the 2016 election of President Donald Trump, who has sought to restrict access to abortion. It’s no surprise, then, that polls have shown that voters overwhelmingly favor expanding access to abortion and reproductive health care, and that candidates who run on a platform that includes abortion rights have seen strong results at the ballot box. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision in June Medical Services v. Russo (formerly June Medical Services v. Gee), which overturned Louisiana’s oppressive abortion law, this trend is likely to be even more pronounced, given that the law was seen as a direct threat to abortion rights. As more and more cases like June Medical make their way through the court system, and states attempt to restrict access to abortion services, it’s likely that abortion rights will continue to be a major ballot winner in elections across the country.
