On March 19, 2021, U.S. Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) filed a motion to remove House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from the GOP leadership position. The filing, made in the House Rules Committee, will be voted on during a meeting of the House Republican Conference.
Gaetz has alleged that McCarthy has been derelict in his duties as the House Minority Leader by failing to advance the GOP’s agenda in the House. He additionally accused McCarthy of padding his own pocket instead of working diligently toward achieving GOP goals.
If the motion passes in the House Republican Conference, McCarthy would be forced to vacate his position as House GOP leader and a new leader would be elected to replace him. That election would likely occur at a later date.
