On the 19th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, President Joe Biden paid tribute to the victims and their families and urged Americans to come together, saying it’s especially important in divisive times.
“On this sacred day, let us remember and honor all who were taken from us 19 years ago, as well as those taken from us far too soon through the scourge of pandemic,” Biden said in a statement Saturday.
“Let us also renew our commitment to embrace our common responsibility to each other and to this great Nation — no matter who we are, no matter our political party, no matter our views or opinions. Let us rededicate ourselves to unifying our country, healing our divisions and drawing strength from our diversity,” he added.
The president noted the attacks had a lasting impact on the nation, from the ways in which the country had to adjust in the realms of security and intelligence. He also mentioned the thousands of American troops lost over more than a decade and a half of war in Afghanistan.
“On this solemn day, we remember them and pray for solace of the families that kept their faith in their country and in each other throughout their grief,” Biden said. “As Americans, we will never forget their service, their sacrifice and the resilience of their loved ones.”
