CNN has appointed Mark Thompson, the former CEO of The New York Times, as its new president and chief executive officer. Thompson, who served as the CEO of the newspaper from 2012 to 2020, has over 30 years of experience in media and entertainment.
Thompson takes over for Jeff Zucker, who had been president and CEO of CNN since 2013. Zucker announced his departure earlier this year.
In a statement, CNN chairman and AT&T chief executive John Stankey said Thompson was “a proven leader with a track record of success in media, technology and entertainment.”
“Mark’s understanding of the intersection of media, technology and commerce will be invaluable as we continue to evolve and grow our brands,” Stankey said.
Thompson also said he is looking forward to bringing his experience to the network brand.
“I’m delighted to be joining CNN at this moment of opportunity and expansion for the brand,” Thompson said in a statement. “CNN has an unrivaled reputation around the world for trusted, independent journalism and I’m excited to be part of the team leading the next chapter in CNN’s remarkable story.”
