In April of 2021, a GOP mother from Tennessee named Christie Clay pushed for legislators to take action on gun reform, even though the Republican-controlled Legislature in Tennessee had refused to do so. Despite the resistance to gun reforms in the Legislature, Clay is still pushing for legislators to establish background checks on all gun sales, a “red flag” law allowing family members and law enforcement to temporarily take firearms away from individuals deemed to be at risk of causing harm to themselves or others, and a three-day waiting period on gun sales. Clay and other gun reform proponents are hoping that their effort will help to reduce the rampant gun violence in many parts of the state.
